How to read a chord diagram

134211
F major, a barre chord at the 1st fret
  • The vertical lines are the strings: the thickest (low E) on the left, the thinnest (high E) on the right.
  • The horizontal lines are the frets. The thick bar at the top is the nut; when a number sits beside the top fret instead, the shape starts at that fret.
  • Dots show where to press. The number in a dot is the finger: 1 index, 2 middle, 3 ring, 4 little finger.
  • A bar across several strings is a barre: one finger, usually the index, holds them all down at that fret.
  • A circle above a string means play it open. A cross means leave it out.
  • In the chord finder, brown dots mark the root, the note the chord is named after.

Chord types and formulas

Every chord is a root plus a few notes above it. The formula counts those notes as steps of the major scale; ♭ lowers a step by a semitone and ♯ raises it.

What chord is this? Name a chord from tab

Switch the finder to Name a chord and tap the frets you are holding, or type them the way tab writes them: one number per string from the low E, with x for a string you don't play. x32010 is C, 2x0232 is D with F♯ in the bass, and 8-10-10-9-8-8 needs dashes because some frets have two digits.

Common chord progressions

The same few sequences turn up in thousands of songs. The numbers count up the scale from the key's root: capitals are major chords, lower case minor. Select a chord to see how to play it.

Chord finder FAQ

How do I find a chord on the guitar?

Type its name, like F#m7 or Bb, or pick a root and a type. The finder shows every shape in its library for that chord, with fingers, and plays it when you tap a diagram.

What chord am I playing?

Open Name a chord and tap the frets you are holding, or type them like x32010. The finder names the chord, lists other names for the same notes, and shows the note on each string.

What does the number next to a chord diagram mean?

It is the fret where the diagram starts. A diagram marked 5 shows a shape played from the 5th fret up. With no number, the thick top line is the nut.

What do X and O mean on a chord chart?

O means the string is played open, with no finger on it. X means the string is not played: mute it with a finger or skip it with the pick.

What is the difference between C, C7, and Cmaj7?

C is a major triad: C, E, and G. C7 adds B♭, a flat seventh, which gives the restless pull of a dominant chord. Cmaj7 adds B, a major seventh, for a softer, jazzier sound.

Why are there several diagrams for one chord?

A chord can be played in several places on the neck. Open shapes ring near the nut; higher shapes use barres and sound fuller or brighter. Pick the one closest to the chords before and after it.

Does it have ukulele chords?

Yes. Switch to Ukulele for chords in standard G C E A tuning. Name a chord also works with low G and baritone tuning.

Is the chord finder free?

Yes, with no account and no limit. It runs in your browser.
